About Us
Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage was officially formed and received charity status in July 2009 by Judi and Bryce Inglis who also operate Rabbit Run. Judi & Bryce have been involved in animal welfare work and the rescue and rehoming of pet rabbits for a number of years. Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage represents the consolidation of their work and was established to enable them to continue their work.
Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage is a non-profit organisation and operates as an incorporated association. It is a public charity, run by a committee under Australian Law. It is an entity that belongs to all people that care about the welfare of pet rabbits. We, together with a small dedicated group of volunteers, are custodians of this charity at this time.
The aims of Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage are:
- To provide for rabbits that are sick, unwanted, stray, or have been mistreated.
- To facilitate
- appropriate short-term care
- medical treatment
- rehabilitation treatment
- long-term re-homing solutions
- appropriate short-term care
- To educate the public on rabbit ownership and care
- To prevent unnecessary euthanasia of rabbits
- To discourage cruelty to rabbits
Bunny orphans have come to Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage as overflows from animal shelters such as AAPS, Lort Smith, Animal Aid, council shelters and private rescues and shelters throughout the state. Bunnies also come to the orphanage as dumped or neglected rabbits handed into vets or rescued through the orphanage's rescue service.
In 2003 two bunnies arrived through a hole in Judi and Bryce's back fence. The two young giants were Hiro (RIP)and Chi. Captured by the intelligence and unique nature of the companion rabbit, this was to begin their journey into pet rabbit welfare.
