Bunnies can get mites and fleas. Fleas are often contracted from other animals like cats and dogs.  Mites can manifest in the ears as scaly skin, and in the fur often referred to as walking dandruff. Never treat with mite spray from pet shops. It is important to get the correct diagnosis and medication for your bunny and DO NOT self diagnose. Never give medication suggested by pet shops or on the Internet without checking with your vet. Dog and cat medication is not always suitable for rabbits.

Male bunnies can be desexed from 14 weeks old or as soon as the testicles drop (please check with your bunny savvy vet).

Female bunnies can be desexed from 5 to 8 months of age (please check with your bunny savvy vet). Desexing your bunny will prevent cancers in the females, and calm temperaments and aggressive behaviour and stop urine spraying in the males. Do not attempt to bond a bunny that is not desexed.

Rabbits like routine and this forms an important part of preparing them for their new homes. Also having a routine allows us to pick-up if a rabbit is unwell.

Not all species or varieties of these plants have the same levels of toxins. Classification is based on the most dangerous plant of that species or variety.

From Nov 2022, bunnies can be vaccinated against all strains of the Calici Virus.  Vaccinate from 12 weeks of age.  The new annual vaccine is called FILAVAC.

Unfortunately, there is no vaccination available in Australia to protect pet rabbits against the lethal Myxomatosis Virus.

Allow the vaccine for Myxomatosis for desexed pet rabbits in Australia. Please download the petition, collect signatures and return to the Orphanage.

Calici Virus Vaccination: Can be administered from 12 weeks old and is an annual vaccine called FILAVAC. 

Desexing: Males: From 14 weeks old or as soon as the testicles drop. Females: 5 to 8 months old (check with your bunny savvy vet.)

General: Regular checkups for diet advise, nail trim, teeth check, mites and general health with your bunny savvy vet.
