Domesticated & Wild/Feral Rabbits

Both domesticated and wild/feral rabbits are referenced under Section 58 of the Catchment and Land Protection Act (CaLP) in Victoria.

 

When any rabbit is securely housed in captivity it is no longer considered to be part of a wild or feral population and consequently no permit is required  for its keeping.

Hares

Hares are referenced under Section 58 of the Catchment and Land Protection Act (CaLP) in Victoria.

 

Each state has different laws regarding hares and in Victoria a permit is required to keep them.

Rabbits in Rentals

You do not need to give up your pet if you are in a rental property in Victoria.

It is up to the real estate agent to apply to VCAT to prove they have good reason for the rental not to allow pets.  Read about your rights and the process here.
